What is HEIC — and why is your phone full of files nothing can open?

Since iOS 11, every iPhone saves photos as HEIC by default. It's a better format in almost every technical way — and it's also the file your colleague, your printer and half the web can't open. Here's what it is, why Apple chose it, and when converting makes sense.

The one-paragraph answer

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is an image format that stores photos at roughly half the file size of JPG at equivalent quality. Apple made it the iPhone default in 2017 because halving photo storage on devices selling in the hundreds of millions was worth forcing a format change. The trade: software that hasn't updated (or paid for codec licences) can't read it.

Why HEIC is technically better

None of that helps if the file won't open where you need it.

Keep HEIC or convert? The honest matrix

Photos staying on your Apple devices / iCloudKeep — smaller storage, better quality, everything supports it

Editing in pro tools (Photoshop etc.)Either — modern tools read both; convert if your workflow is mixed-OS

How to convert HEIC to JPG — your options

Typical workflow: keep shooting HEIC (better storage), convert the ones you share — how to convert HEIC to JPG →

One more reason conversions here come out clean

Decoding a HEIC and re-encoding a JPG builds a fresh file — which means the output carries no EXIF metadata (camera, GPS, timestamps). For anything you're sharing, that's a feature, not a bug: see what's inside your photos for why metadata-free output matters.

Questions people ask

Is HEIC the same as HEIF?

HEIF is the container format family; HEIC is the brand name Apple uses for HEIF files holding photos. In practice: a file ending .heic is a HEIF image, and everyone just calls it HEIC.

Why does Apple use a format others can't open?

It's notApple-only — Android 9+ and Windows 10/11 (with extensions) support it. It's an industry format (from the MPEG group) that Apple simply adopted first and made default. The catch is codec licences and old software.

Can I convert HEIC back from JPG?

Yes, but you'd gain nothing: converting JPG → HEIC can't restore quality already lost. Keep the original HEIC as your archive and convert copies for sharing.

Do converted JPGs keep the photo's date?

The file's EXIF timestamp isn't carried over (output is metadata-free), but your operating system usually keeps the file's modified date — and your original HEIC is untouched on your device regardless.
